The Odyssey is an epic poem attributed to Homer. It is noted as one of the great works of Western literature and, along with the
Iliad, is said to form the prototype for all subsequent Western epic poetry. The poem begins approximately ten years after the fall of Troy and chronicles the trials and
tribulations of Odysseus. Because it is written retrospectively, however, it is sometimes difficult to get a firm grasp on the actual chronology of the events which occurred during Odysseus
travels. Instead of starting at the time Odysseus left his homeland bound for war the poem starts after the fall of Troy. Numerous other chronological events are sporadically
intermixed in regard to the order in which they appear in the poem. The purpose of this paper, therefore is to provide a timeline of a few of the major
events which unfold in the Odyssey, a timeline which is based on actual chronology and not on the events order as presented in the poem by Homer.
All of the events which unfold in the Odyssey cannot possibly be presented within the confines of such a short paper. Several of
the more noteworthy events can, however. A brief outline of these events is as follows: 1. Odysseus leaves
and fights in the Trojan War 2. Odysseus departs from Troy and Destroys Cicones 3. Encounter with the Lotus-Eaters 4. Encounter with the Cyclops
