Great art often survives to span the centuries impacting not just those cultures that created it but also those in contemporary times. If one were to travel
back in time to view three of the greatest pieces of art from three of the greatest of mans cultures, the trip agenda would undoubtedly include architectural examples from Ancient
Egypt, Classical Greece, and Rome. Thanks to the invention of a time machine, I have been able to do just that. My time travel has allowed me to
experience these cultures and their art first hand. I have recorded my impressions of notable architecture from each of these cultures below. My intent is to ultimately synthesize
these impressions for inclusion in my upcoming book. Greece Ancient Greece was the first stop
on my trip back into time. Remembered most for its glorious palaces and temples, Greek architecture is actually quite varied and reflects a number of cultural inputs. The
architecture varies considerably according to the time period, sometimes rapidly transitioning from one style to another with little apparent overlap (Dickinson, 2008). Greek life was impacted in many ways
by its art and architecture (Dickinson, 2008). Two of the most visible of these ways were the varying techniques which went into its production. Prior to the creation
of Greeces great marble temples of the 5th century B.C., for example, the Greeks employed more primitive building techniques utilizing bricks made of mud and dried in the sun.
Columns and other uprights constructed of wood were utilized then as well. The Heraeum at Olympia characterize both this and successive periods as the temple underwent considerable architectural modifications
