At first, one may not plainly recognize Poes deeper assertions beyond the disturbing quality of the old mans "vulture eye" only to note that it casts an uneasy shiver upon those it gazes upon; however, as the story unfolds, the reader is better able to ascertain the link between the narrators already-unstable mental condition and the final thoughts that unhinge his murderous behavior. "Presently, I heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief -- oh, no! It was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight, when all the world slept, it has welled up from my own bosom, deepening, with its dreadful echo, the terrors that distracted me. I say I knew it well" (Poe, 5). The Tell-Tale Heart is an exercise in hidden realities, inasmuch as it readily illustrates the untouched intelligence of a mentally ill person - a person who might easily be Poe himself. Poes preoccupation with humanitys darker side could very well have perpetuated his subconscious desire to project himself into such works as this as a way in which to subjugate the demons he had swirling nonstop in his mind. He had, after all, attempted suicide on at least one occasion by ingesting laudanum during a particularly deep fit of depression; two ounces later, he was sick but not dead.
