recognize Poes deeper assertions beyond the disturbing quality of the old mans "vulture eye" only to note that it casts an uneasy shiver upon those it gazes upon; however, as
the story unfolds, the reader is better able to ascertain the link between the narrators already-unstable mental condition and the final thoughts that unhinge his murderous behavior. "Presently, I
heard a slight groan, and I knew it was the groan of mortal terror. It was not a groan of pain or of grief -- oh, no! It
was the low stifled sound that arises from the bottom of the soul when overcharged with awe. I knew the sound well. Many a night, just at midnight,
