involves Afghanistan and the Taliban. The following paper offers a review of the book by Hosseini. A Thousand Splendid Suns The two primary characters in this novel are
Mariam and Laila. The story begins with the character of Mariam, who is an illegitimate child who sees her father only once a week. She is a young girl who
is spoiled by him, but not later accepted by him into his family and this is why she is married off to a bitter and violent man, Rasheed. After
years of an unhappy marriage, and failed pregnancies, there comes Laila, a young girl who was well educated by her parents and who is pregnant with her lovers child. Because
her parents were killed in a bombing, and Rasheed found her and took her in, she is all but forced to marry Rasheed as she has no one else. In
her story and in Mariams the reader sees how women have no power or control over their lives in this region. As the story unfolds about the two girls/women
there are also elements that speak of the political and military struggles in the region. For example, Laila has two brothers who went off to fight and were killed, something
that leads to her mothers isolated depression, and something that demonstrates the power of the political and military turmoil. In addition, Lailas lover had to leave town with his parents
as they had to go into hiding, something Lailas parents were going to do but were bombed in the act of packing. In the story the tensions of the
