related to rights of individuals are dubbed human rights. For example, a recent New York Times article argues that while some university students are protesting monetary relationships with Israeli
businessmen, the students are being disingenuous. Friedman (2002) asks: "How is it that Saudi Arabia denies its women the most basic human rights, and bans any other religion from being
practiced publicly on its soil, and not a single student group calls for divestiture from Saudi Arabia?" (p.PG). The author claims that in Saudi Arabia, the most basic human
rights for women are denied. However, many Saudi women would beg to differ, suggesting that they are a part of a patriarchal culture by choice. Indeed, murdering women for adultery
appears to be a bit harsh and may fall under human rights abuses, but there must be a line to cross. Not all freedoms integral in democracy is a human
right. If it were, then communism would not be an applauded alternative to the system of government that allows wide discrepancies in income. Might someone say that it is
inhumane to allow people to work in a janitorial job where he or she earns the minimum wage? Someone who has high academic degrees, but cannot find a job in
a shaky economy, might feel that way about accepting a job that only pays a minimal amount of money. Yet, there are no human rights that have been violated. People
do not have a right to a job, to health insurance, to marital bliss and so forth, and anything that impedes such happiness or security cannot be construed as a
