of a series and speaks of a mystery involving a murder and other mysterious elements. Within this story lies many bits and pieces of the Navajo, or Dineh, people. The
following paper offers a review of Hillermans work with an emphasis on what one can see regarding Native peoples and their traditions, as well as their compromises in relationship to
European influence. A Thief of Time As mentioned, HIllermans novel is a mystery, a murder mystery, and it is also something of a ghost story it would seem.
Much of the setting lies within New Mexico in areas that are considered somewhat historical if not magical, such as Chaco Canyon. It may be helpful to note that this
reader/writer essentially lives in the heart of the area that Hillerman speaks of and they have been to Chaco Canyon and thus knows something of the people and the areas
of which Hillerman writes. Hillerman presents many different elements of the characteristics of the Navajo/Dineh people. For example he speaks of their fears and traditions involving death and speaks
of their mannerisms such as the twisting or jutting of a lower lip to indicate a sort of pointing in a particular direction. He speaks of Navajo time which does
not really coincide with American European time for things get done when they get done and time, according to a watch or a clock, has little meaning in many ways.
This ultimately and essentially seems to almost set the tone of Hillermans book as well for there is something of a timeless quality to the manner in which the plot
unfolds, and a very loose, yet traditionally founded, manner in which the mystery is solved and facts unfold. In further understanding something of the Amerindians in this work the
