assessments of psychological and psychosocial functioning. Maslows article, first published in 1943, has been recognized as a basis for motivational theory and as a means of understanding what motivates
individuals towards both normative behaviors and deviance. Though a powerful paper on this topic, Maslows structure, which is linked to his previous paper, "A Preface to Motivation Theory," references
his previous work in a manner that assumes that the reader has read this earlier work. Maslow does begin with an introduction to some of the major elements
set forth in this earlier work. In this way, it can be argued that Maslow was attempting to address the needs of a reader who might not have had
exposure to his first paper on this topic. Even so, providing a brief overview of this earlier work does not contextualize any of these points or provide the background
to his argument. As a result, the reader really does need to go back and read his Preface in order to get a full understanding of Maslows points and
the background of his motivational theory. After presenting these points, Maslow does offer the purpose of his paper, which clarifies the constructs of his work and demonstrates the integration
of both his Preface paper and this new paper. Maslow states that his purpose is to: "formulate a positive theory of motivation which will satisfy these theoretical demands
and at the same time conform to the known facts, clinical and observational as well as experimental" (Maslow 370). A critical analysis of this paper, then, must be based
