Either that, or her behavior is so perfect that we find it off-putting, because there is usually a suggestion that it is also hypocritical; that is, her public behavior does not reflect her true character. This paper is a Theophrastan character sketch of this type of girl; in fact, it is based on the "real" Goody Two Shoes. Discussion The first thing to do is determine what such a sketch is. It turns out that Theophrastus was a student of Aristotle who wrote not only about scientific subjects, but also left a series of "short studies, virtually caricatures, of a wide range of Greek personalities, including the Boor, the Loquacious Man, the Social Parasite, the Miser, and three dozen more" (Miller). We note immediately that the description of the character is an adjective, not a persons name, so we may conclude that a Theophrastan sketch deals in stereotypes rather than reality. The original text was "gradually assembled in the 16th c. as more Characters were discovered"; soon there were thousands of sketches being written in English, modeled on Theophrastuss work (Miller). Many, if not most, of these sketches are very sharp, almost satiric, but "the aim is descriptive rather than satirical" (Miller). It seems that most of them are great fun, probably because we can see ourselves or people we know in them. In the case of Goody Two Shoes, it turns out that she is based on a character from a book by the same name, published in London in 1766 ("Goody Two Shoes"). In the book, a little girl named Margery Meanwell and her brother Tommy are orphaned; Tommy eventually goes off to have adventures and thus presumably leaves the story for a while so that Margery has the stage to herself ("Goody Two Shoes").
