a rural community and had shared many of lifes experiences. My great aunt was the practical one; she cooked, cleaned, sewed patterns and remembered every family event back as
far as the Great Depression. My grandmother, though, was the family philosopher, and she shared her wisdom, her spirituality and her sense of family. Though they were complementary
spirits, my grandmother had the ability to inspire others and bring out the best in most people. When I was eight, my grandmother and aunt brought me to their
home for a week vacation. My parents had left on a week long trip to California, and my brother was spending the week with friends. I felt a little
deserted, but realized that these two women had a lot to share. My aunt taught me some of her favorite recipes and talked at length about the politics of
the day. My grandmother often sat back and watched, sometimes commenting and sometimes just waiting to provide praise. She told me that the ginger cookies I had made
from Aunt Leas recipe were better than her own cookies, and she ate more than a handful of them before dinner. After two
days with them, I felt sure I could stay with them forever. I remember the smells of their house, the ginger cookies, the lavender in the bathroom, the orange
rinds in basket in the front hallway. My grandmother was quick to remind me that sometimes it is the little things in life that make life so interesting.
