many ways, these struggles reveal much about human nature as the similarities in their struggles coincide with the accompanying political and moral similarities. Understanding the similarities between these two groups
helps us understand the world at large, and to better understand how each individuals struggle for freedom is essentially the same as anothers.
The people of Basque country have been engaged in a struggle for freedom from Spain which has spanned over thirty years (Daly, 1999). During this war,
the group has fought diligently for their goal, and in the process has been responsible for over 800 lives (Daly, 1999). The party working for separation calls themselves the
ETA (a Basque-language acronym for Basque Homeland and Freedom), and it is this extreme militant group which has been responsible for the killings (Daly, 1999).
The ETA calls their proposed homeland Euskal Herria, which is the industrial region split between southern France and the autonomous Basque Country region in Spain
(Daly, 1999). Additionally, the Basque nationalists also have laid claim to Pamplona, which is famous for their annual running of the bulls (Daly, 1999). And yet, this Basque
region does have some sort of self-governance, in the form of the Basque Parliament, which was set up in 1975 after the Franco dictatorship ended (Daly, 1999). However, much
animosity remains between this parliament and the central government in Madrid (Daly, 1999). The Spanish government has been reluctant to
