This paper summarizes the film and analyzes the problem it tackles from the symbolic interactionist perspective. Discussion The film stars Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn as Matt and Christina Drayton, upper-class parents whose daughter Joey, played by Hepburns real-life niece Katharine Houghton has fallen in love with a John Prentice, a young black surgeon (Sidney Poitier). (Guess Whos Coming to Dinner). Her parents are liberals who talk a lot about equality and equal rights-but they have a maid Tillie (Isabel Sanford), also black, whom they do not treat as an equal. They seem to patronize her, though they recognize that the household couldnt function without her. Their beliefs are challenged when Joey brings John home to meet them; hence the title of the movie. The question / problem here is: can these people accept their potential son-in-law and move beyond their unspoken prejudices and discrimination? The answer, it turns out, is yes, because they can see how much the two love each other. But the road to the final fade out is a rocky one, because each of the parents has to face the fact that they are prejudiced, no matter how much they wish they werent. This goes for the black couple as well (Beah Richards and Roy Glenn) who arent happy that their son is considering marrying a white girl (Guess Whos Coming to Dinner). That is always something of a shock for whites, who often forget that they are not everyones perfect romantic ideal. Johns father is far more set against the marriage than Johns mother; in fact, it is the women who finally bring about the reconciliation that leads to acceptance, and to the six of them sitting down to dinner together.
