is a very real problem in our country. One way of assessing how crime is affecting our lives is through surveys. Surveys are frequently employed to gauge various
aspects of a community or population. Surveys, however, are only as reliable as are those that are completing them! Several precautions, however, can be taken to insure that
the outcome of a survey is more reflective of fact than it is of fiction. Furthermore, it must be cautioned that some surveys have more relevance to a larger
population than do others. Just because one survey reveals certain findings, it does not automatically mean these findings apply to all Americans.
Apartments.com (a website devoted to providing information about apartment living) sponsored a national survey during national crime prevention month in 2009. The survey was designed to assess
renters attitudes about the relative safety of where they lived. The results of the survey, published on the Apartments.com web site, are quite revealing about how important a factor criminal
activity was in determining the choices people who were surveyed made about where they lived and the steps they took to protect themselves and their property.
