approach would suggest that a leader could learn the skills to become a more effective leader. In 1955, Robert Katz proposed three categories of skills leaders should have: technical skills,
human skills, and conceptual skills. Technical skills relate to knowledge and capabilities the leader needs to be competent and proficient in certain activities (Valenzuela, 2009). Human skills are nearly self-evident.
These are the skills leaders need to relate to and to interact with other people. This would include excellent communication skills and the ability to work with groups and
teams as well as the social skills to get each member of the team to perform at maximum potential (Valenzuela, 2009). Conceptual skills are a bit more difficult
to define. These are the many skills that allow the leader to understand what needs to be done, how and when (Valenzuela, 2009). Leaders need to be able to conceptualize
ideas, he or she needs to be able to see the big picture (Valenzuela, 2009). Katz identified the level of importance each of these three areas has for each
level of management. The most important skills for top level management are human and conceptual; the most important for mid-level management is human skills and the most important for supervisory
management are technical and human (Valenzuela, 2009). Mid-level management also need a fair degree of technical and conceptual skills while technical skills are not that important for top level management
and conceptual skills not that important for supervisory management (Valenzuela, 2009). Blake and Mouton offered what was a very unique approach to leadership in 1964. They presented the managerial grid
that identified five different managerial styles that basically identify the priority the individual places on product versus people. The five styles are: Country Club, Team Leader, Impoverished, Produce or
