about and solve problems. It offers a list of steps, which can range from five to as many as eight steps depending on the version of the scientific method being
used (The Scientific Method, No Date). The scientific method is based on the belief that events and behavior do not occur without reason, but rather that natural phenomena can be
explained via understandable laws and principles (Anderson, 2004). According to Duane Dyer of the Utah Education Network, the scientific method works best when there are circumstances that allow the researchers
to isolate a phenomena (Dyer, No Date). Scientific methodology consists of, first of all, determining a question, then determining an hypothesis, testing the hypothesis through experimentation and observation, recording results
and drawing conclusions (Cowen, No Date). Gherardi, Russo and Lazzara (2002) used the scientific method to investigate the behavior of the sand-bubbler crab (Dotilla fenestrata). When this species of
crab emerge from their burrows with the receding tide, some crabs stay behind at the burrows, while others wander away. The research team investigated the question of what environmental factors
are influential on this behavior. The researchers hypothesized that the sand-bubbler crabs, on emergence from their burrows, assess the food quality of the substrate and this influences subsequent behavior.
In order to test this hypothesis, the research team established four 50x50 cm quadrants, with 50 cm between them. Each of these quadrants were randomly chosen and either enriched with
diatoms or with animal proteins, or it was impoverished by taking away the top 3 mm of substrate (Gherardi, Russo and Lazzara, 2002). One quadrant was left unmodified as a
control. At low tide, the research team recorded the number of active crabs and the number of igloos, which the crabs built, every ten minutes (Gherardi, Russo and Lazzara, 2002).
