both of whom married Moab women, Orpah and Ruth. Elimelech died, leaving Naomi a widow. Both sons died. Naomi, Orpah and Ruth left Moab for Judah, along the way Naomi told Orpah and Ruth they should go back to their homes where they would find husbands. Orpah reluctantly left but Ruth refused to leave Naomi, vowing her loyalty and love even past life. Ruth says that she will be buried wherever Naomi is buried, which is a declaration of love and loyalty past physical life. When they returned, Ruth was able to get them food after the harvesters had gone through the field. The owner, Boaz, was kind to Ruth and through dialog and at her request, Ruth became one of his servants. When Naomi learns the owners name, she realizes he is from Elimelechs clan and she advises Ruth to go to the threshing floor and after Boaz has eaten and falls asleep, Ruth should quietly lift up his blanket and lay at his feet. He awakens during the night and Ruth expresses her desire to marry him according to the kinsman-redeemer custom. Boaz tells her he knows there is another man who is a closer relative and would have a prior claim on Naomis property. Boaz arranges a meeting with the other man, calling in elders and others to witness the exchange. The other man renounces his claim and takes off his sandal to seal the deal as the witnesses vow they have witnessed the transaction. Boaz marries Ruth, Naomi becomes a nurse for their children. Ruths son, Obed. Obed became "the father of Jesse, the father of David" (Ruth 4:17). Ruth, then, is the great-grandmother of David, the King, and an ancestor of Jesus Christ.
