the Jordan River and into Canaan. The structure of this book, then, has been considered by some to be a "valedictory oration delivered by Moses" and the entirety of
the work is asserted to be his word (Weinfeld 10). At the same time, there are points in Deuteronomy when the story seems to relate both the law and
history of the law, and so there is some question as to the composition of the structure of this Book and the impact this has on the substance of the
information presented. The Book of Deuteronomy begins with a historical perspective, provided as a means of understanding and contextualizing what has occurred and explaining the views of Moses and the
reasons behind the presentation of the Ten Commandments. This first section, then, stands as an introduction and historical account of what occurred before their presence at on the banks
of the Jordan, prior to the crossing into Canaan. This review of the history of how the people of Israel came out of Egypt is an important and
relevant element that supports the presentation of sermons of Moses. The Book of Deuteronomy, then, incorporates three sermons of Moses, the first of which comes in the first
chapter, and discusses what God has done for the people of Israel. In this Sermon, Moses relates the actions that were taken that made it possible for the people
of Israel to escape the control of Egypt, and the role that Moses himself played in bringing some of that about. This Sermon is further supported by some of
the central tenets of the faith that Moses supports, including the underlying principles that relate to Israels allegiance to God. This, then, acts as the point from which the
