call long after voting day, 2008 may prove to also have historical significance. Why? Frontrunners for the Democratic party include a woman and a man who is African American. If
either run for the presidency and win, that would be a first. Clearly, the primaries will be colorful and gripping. Other well known figures enter the fray, including John Edwards.
This is not the first time John Edwards has attempted to gain the Democratic nomination for president. He tried in 2004 and also ran as a Vice Presidential hopeful in
2000, so Edwards is a familiar face. He is the good looking, seemingly ageless senator from North Carolina, and continues to fight for the nomination despite personal setbacks. The most
significant aspect of his campaign this time around is his ailing wife in her public struggle with cancer. Despite this major health issue, John Edwards with the support of his
wife, decided to continue the quest for the White House. Although courageous, this has caused people to doubt his ability to lead the country. Obviously, if Elizabeth takes a turn
for the worse, his attention will be diverted. A survey taken in June of 2007 shows Edwards tied with Barack Obama as second to Hillary Clinton ("American Research Group," 2007).
The margin is wide. This is not a close second and further, Edwards shares this with Obama. Hillary leads with 40% of the support to Edwards and Obamas 15% ("American
Research Group," 2007). Also, a further breakdown shows a greater lead for Obama when women are concerned. For women, Hillary gets even more votes and Obamas 15% is better than
Edwards 10% ("American Research Group," 2007). Yet, Edwards does better with men and for that demographic, Clinton has 35% to Edwards 24% ("American Research Group," 2007). For men, Obama only
