die, because they are confined in their world, in the society, in their roles as mothers and wives. Even though these stories are about women from very different time periods,
and thus different societies, they are going through similar problems. They are women who present us with the timeless reality of how marriage can be an ultimately confining reality where
a woman cannot find a way in which to possess her own identity. The following paper compares and contrasts the women in these stories, showing how they are both suffering
from the constraints of marriage (and mothering in one story) despite the fact that they take place in very different time periods. A Story of an Hour and
A Sorrowful Woman In both stories we see reflections of reality that is timeless. A woman, even if she works, is expected to be a good wife and mother. There
are certain things that are expected of women in our society, even if they work and have their own identity away from families. They are expected to always be there
to nurture those in need. They are expected to put their own desires aside much of the time because their role is to take care of the family and always
be there. They, as individuals, come second when they have a husband and a family. Even in todays society where a woman can be successful in a business occupation all
unto herself, she is expected to be a mother before a career woman. These are the realities that are facing these two women in the short stories under examination.
These women, though from very different time periods, time periods which offer more or less constraint in what a woman is allowed to do, are both experiencing the timeless demands
