afloat. In the second quarter of 2002, Airborne Express did make a small profit of $457,000 in spite of falling volumes in its core overnight express service (Krause, 2002a). Yet,
it had been having problems. It was forced to cut costs and then restructure itself into a leaner and more productive competitor (2002a). It is presently the low-cost
provider in its niche (2002a). It cannot really afford to lower prices. Also, increasing prices would definitely send customers elsewhere. What did the company do to realize a profit? It
would become lean and mean once again. Airborne eliminated $84 million in operating expenses during the first six months of the year (2002a). The firm took a $2.3 million charge
however during the same quarter in order to pay for restructuring expenses that are primarily associated with its international operations (2002a). The company had also consolidated facilities across the
United States as it pulled import and export operations that used to be located in separate facilities (2002a). Through the elimination of redundant facilities and the reduction of associated staff,
the firm would save $12 million to $14 million per year (2002a). Although it is true that the firm made a great deal of changes, what it did
not do was to look internally. Could the firm have cut pension and insurance costs for example, something that many firms struggle with? In fact, due to legislation, it seems
that such items are expensive for companies. They must provide insurance for all if they provide for one. Also, insurance and pension plans lure workers and are an enticement to
stay on board. It can halt attrition. Yet, others may think that the downsizing that had been done by Airborne thus far is enough. However, Krause (2002b) reports that Airborne
