shops have become a standard component in our globalized world. While we would like to change the problems that much of the world experiences, it is difficult to come up with one workable solution to the complexity of issues that emerges. That sentence in itself, however, holds the key to a solution. The key is the education of the American consumer as to what is actually happening in third world countries in relation to American operations there. The American consumer, after all, holds the purse strings that control whether these industries profit or not. If they choose to not purchase what these companies produce because of inhumane working conditions, unfair wages, or environmental impacts then there is no reason for these countries to establish these operations. We have transitioned somewhat from the time where developed nations established sweatshops within their own borders and preyed on women, children, and immigrant workers to produce their products in return for wages that allowed them to barely survive. Today developed nations have reached out across the world to less technologically developed nations where they find workers to fill these niches. Although it consists of many versions, the real problem with sweatshops arises when the workers that are producing it are not being fairly compensated for their time and/or are forced to work under inhumane conditions. We must realize, of course, that fair compensation is one thing in countries like the US where the cost of living is exorbitantly high and the cost of living in lesser developed countries around the world. As might be expected, there are significant differences in opinion regarding what comprises adequate sweatshop wages and working conditions. ...
