global economy that thrives on sports, players come from all over the world. The Yankees simply have more money to spend on players salaries. In some way, this makes the
playing field rather murky and it just seems that this is not fair. Of course, equity is unimportant. That is capitalism. If one can say that the baseball situation as
it respects salaries is not fair, one might say that about entertainers as well. Is it fair that Friends stars get a million dollars per episode when other actors only
get maybe a few thousand per episode? In baseball, the most important resource that a team has is money (Moffatt, 2003). Salaries for players range in the hundreds of
thousands to millions of dollars and depend upon skill and while to some this may not seem fair, it is capitalism. The salaries are dictated by market forces. If a
player is very good, the teams who compete for the championship--that yields team owners profit--will want to buy that player. The player makes more money for the team, so while
a player may command a million dollar salary, the team owners profit much more than he does. Similarly, NBC profits from Friends even if the actors do get a lot
of money. Obviously, no one would pay actors or baseball players a high salary if they could not afford to. The big conglomerates, or team owners, who are able to
pay the players a lot of money will only do so if it is profitable for them. To many , the current system is acceptable, but to Karl Marx,
