sources. SA145Oth.rtf It is still a taboo for black and white individuals to date. One would think that in 2001, racial politics
would have changed and people would just be considered people. Yet, a black and white couple are generally shunned. While even cosmopolitan people try not to notice, there is an
obvious violation of the norm. Most couples are not interracial even now, so when Shakespeare wrote Othello, one can imagine that audiences were mesmerized.
It is important to note that while cultural conflicts often remain unresolved in discussions when analyzing texts such as Othello, students will learn that readers interpret the past
in respect to the present (Singh 70). People only have a current reference point and when reading historical fiction, do often compare what occurs in the context of the work
with what is happening in the present day. Because of this tendency it becomes more important to look at things in context. In this instance, racism is a problem, and
it is today. Yet, in looking back through history, one sees that racism was much more prevalent two hundred years ago when African Americans were held against their will. Although
that may not seem to be an excuse for the persistence of racism, it helps to put things into perspective. When Shakespeare wrote, again, it was a different world. It
was a time when only Indians lived in America and Shakespeare wrote on a different continent altogether. Racism is a sociological problem.
