sport. Gender works on various levels in this contemporary work. The protagonist Maggie Fitzgerald is coached by Frank Dunn, a trainer who had failed in coaching male boxers. In a
sense, taking on a female fighter is somewhat emasculating. At least, there is a sense that he is taking a step down. Training females perhaps is tantamount to failure, further
cementing that image. Nevertheless, Maggie is determined to win. Interestingly, Dunn has a rocky relationship with his own daughter and in some way, there is a sense that gender comes
into play. While this man is not on good terms with his own daughter, he perhaps can make amends by coaching a female, something he never thought he would do.
Maggie is similarly estranged from her own family. In the end, Maggie is hurt and becomes paralyzed. She continues to have a fighting spirit and never regrets her journey. By
the time the film ends, it is Dunn who helps her through the end of life and provides her with the wherewithal to end her suffering. She is given an
overdose of medication, as that is her will. It is a sad ending, but the film is replete with meaning. Prior to her death, Maggies family comes to see her
just to secure their inheritance, something that brings money into the picture. Clearly, they care little about her. Yet, the fact that Maggie does have something to leave to her
downtrodden relatives is evidence of her success, something that is never acknowledged by her own family. This film is about, above all, women who are secure in their gender and
