after all, is obsessed with breasts, which is technically a fetish. In other parts of the world, people sunbath topless or in the nude and there is no sexual connotation.
In some way, the American culture is schizophrenic as it sees sex as something naughty, and ties nudity to sex, but America on the other hand is flooded with many
adult entertainment businesses. How can a culture with a large sex industry be so prudish as to make a big thing out of showing a bit of flesh on television?
There is really more going on than sex. After all, Sex in the City-although censored-is a show that includes full frontal nudity and sexual themes. That show appears on regular
network television in re-runs, and despite the fact that bare breasts are censored, Janets impromptu exposure hardly seems worth mention in comparison. But the incident caused a fiasco, highlighting the
plight of the Jackson family as a whole and it also added to the negativity surrounding the group. What is it about the Jackson family that invites confrontation, paparazzi and
law enforcement? In some ways it seems as if this situation, and the situations like it, somehow are involved in hegemonic negotiation. On one hand, Michael Jackson is a superstar,
and Janet in her own right, is famous and well liked. But the dominant culture prevails and when all is said and done, underlying the accolades is the idea that
