student writing on this topic, another observation is that this black rapper is not unlike other black men who by acting in this manner can hold tight to their "street
credibility." In part, they need this king of respect in order to sell records. A student emphasizes the fact that much has to do with money and how it can
buy freedom from criminal punishment. Effectively, the rappers money and fame did lead to a lighter sentence. However, there is a trade off which is that with this rappers help,
society might change for the better. The theory of institutional anomie might help in evaluating this case. Hunter & Dantzer (2005) explore Messner and Rosenfelds theory of anomie, claiming
that it elaborates on Mertons work. Authors also say that the theorists see the problem with society as being economically challenged where doing well in business is applauded (Hunter &
Dantzer, 2005). This creates a situation where institutions such as the family and church are weakened, and crime is more likely (Hunter & Dantzer, 2005). The idea here is that
with fewer solid ties to the community, and the lure of easy money, people get lost. They end up committing crime because there is no significant moral base. While the
authors theories are related to complicated sociological concepts, this is similar to what mothers have been saying in America for years. They want their children to go to church, to
stay out of trouble, and to get a good education. According to Messner & Rosenfeld (2000), things go awry because there is money to be made and that is coveted.
