had some things in common. They were not completely different and although class is a factor in the tragedy, it is not the overwhelming factor in the relationship. The differences
between the Capulets and Montagues were highlighted by Shakespeare, the main assumption being that the pair could not be together due to the family to which they were born.
Since Shakespeare had written this tale, that many suggest is simply a poignant love story, others have taken the classic theme and enhanced it. Romeo and Juliet has been portrayed
via dance (Ellison and McKenzie PG). It has also found its way to stage in a variety of ways, and film, also utilizing different techniques. A postmodern version that appeared
on movie screens not too long ago starred Claire Danes (Corliss PG; "Cineman Syndicate" PG). But an extreme interpretation comes from the Oak Park-River Forest High School in Illinois, that
includes a racial twist; they cast the families as black and white as a way to "bring home the feud of the Montagues and Capulets " ("Race" 16). Black students
were the Capulets, or Juliets family, while white students played all the Montagues (16). Clearly, the students made the point that the families were very different by adding a racial
component. But were they all that different in Shakespeares original version? Many seem to think so and that high schools rendition was not all that extreme, considering what others have
done to the plot. In the late 1950s, Leonard Bernstein and Jerome Robbins, amongst others, decided to take Romeo and Juliet, and change the place and time to he
