he is in prison, and an FBI agent named Clarice interviews him in order to glean inside information as she tracks a different killer who is on the loose. Lecter
appears to be evil and that is really the mystery this film expresses. In the evaluation of Lecters character, which theories seem to ring true? What can explain his behavior?
First, a look at theories in this area is appropriate. Labeling theory is similar to the self-fulfilling prophesy where children are labeled as this or that and in
the end, they turn into their labels. The bad boy grows up to be a bad man, for example. Ditton (1979) takes labeling theory a step further, and incorporates the
role of the state into how people are placed in categories. One can in fact take labeling theory to its extreme in explaining the role of crime. One can see
that labeling, and putting people into various categories will essentially create an almost predestined life, where one is hard pressed to break out of their designated categories. It is frightening,
but in some way sociology studies society through a prescribed notion of life chances. It does not predict something will occur for sure, in a particular human being, but it
recognizes that a set of behaviors, socioeconomic status, biology and so forth create predictors of future behavior. When serial killers are discovered, there is sometimes an "aha" reaction-such as in
the film Psycho-but in other instances, there is puzzlement. Although the details of Hannibal Lecters upbringing is not apparent in the film, a prequel was released entitled Hannibal
Rising which suggests that his boyhood was quite tragic. He witnessed his family being murdered. If in fact one can connect the dots in light of this information, it is
