follows: " Their kidnapper, the repellent and manipulative Hythe, tells them that they will be trained to perform as gymnasts for the amusement of the insect-like inhabitants of Vexa" (p.747).
The primary characters are Joella, Peter and Liane who are siblings. Because they are expected to perform, one would think it would put pressure on the children. To some extent
it does. Flowers (1995) correctly points out that Joella who is the narrator has no athletic talent. Hythe pits the performers against one another and makes the children perform deadly
stunts for entertainment purposes alone (Flowers, 1995). Some of the children die as a result. One can begin to see that the thematic elements are related to life on Earth
and not this fictitious planet. That is, in the circus in the real world human beings treat animals poorly. Animals are made to do tricks for entrainment purposes alone without
regard for their well-being. In regard to children, there are parallels as well. Children have different skill sets and abilities that are seemingly innate. In this piece, Liane and
Peter are able to perform their tasks fairly well. They are one of the crowd, but Joella lags behind. The problem is that in school, in general, there are some
who do not have natural abilities, but teachers push them to perform. Their performance is measured and if they measure up, they pass onto the next level, or go to
the next grade the following year. If not, they may have to repeat a grade. If they act out emotionally for example, they are punished. They may be reprimanded by
