style and tone. The following paper examines aspects of this particular poem, offering up study notes for the poem. The paper is divided into summary, form and commentary.
Summary This particular poem, written in 1799, is considered to be one of several poems that Wordsworth wrote about Lucy. There is a
great deal of controversy and confusion over who Lucy was, and if she was even a real person or perhaps just a part of Wordsworths imagination. What is important is
that this is not the only poem wherein she appears and as such the reader can perhaps see that there is more to Lucy than this one poem. It
is a very brief poem that seems to speak of the death of a loved one and how he, the narrator, has come upon a place where he has sealed
up his spirit, perhaps protecting himself from further pain. It is also a poem that clearly connects the dead individual to a timeless state that is part of nature.
Form This particular poem has a very clear pattern of rhyme. It is considered to a type of poem that possesses a
common meter. This is the type of meter that most people are familiar with. It is structured in a way that most people recognize, and perhaps offers the type of
meter most people will create when made to write their own poem or song. In this common meter exists lines that alter from an iambic tetrameter to an iambic trimester.
