is a tool to understanding what life was like for black Americans in the 19th century. Discussion November 7, 1911: My name is Sarah Johnson and Im now somewhere around
80 years old. I dont know really because I dont know when I was born because nobody kept records of slave births (Douglas). Im not sure who my daddy was.
Some people said he the man owned the plantation but I dont know. They say that cause my skin is lighter than some others, but I dont know. The way
I was treated I dont see how I can be his girl, who would treat their child the way I was treated? Living conditions: Conditions on the plantation seem horrible
to me now, but when I lived there it didnt seem so bad. I was very young and strong, and it was my life and all I knew. When you
only know one way to live, it seems natural. My family and me lived in a slave cabin on the plantation. Our cabin had one room where we did everything.
We had the bed shoved up against the wall in the corner as far away from the door as we could get, because there was only a small fireplace and
we never had enough wood to keep the cabin warm. It was very cold in winter, but at least it was on the ground. In had a dirt floor, but
it was warmer than the cabins that were raised off the ground. The wind blew under those cabins and they were miserable cold. We were lucky because we didnt
have to share our cabin with another family, some cabins had two families in one room, with kids and parents and old people all crammed in together. The streets werent
