celebrated for years until it was discovered that this explorer was a cruel man. Certainly, despite his wondrous discoveries which were themselves contested, people will not accept the horrendous past
and chalk it down to it having taken place long ago. However, some do. In fact, a great deal of the rhetoric surrounding affirmative action today is built on the
foundation of truths and lies through the centuries when black people were mistreated. To understand just how severely they suffered, primary sources are desirable. The obvious reason for this is
that in the translation, over decades, a great deal of the horror is erased. Even the human mind tends to forget the bad parts of their memories in favor of
the retention of good thoughts. By reading diaries and autobiographies of a time period one can, in addition to obtaining more accurate information, also capture the flavor of the day.
In studying the Atlantic slave trade, what better account would there be than someone actively involved in the activity? Thus, in researching this period of history, the 1853 original
manuscript of Captain Theophilus Conneau has been selected to be viewed in context. Although one may believe that a trader might cover up or minimize the difficulties and brutality, the
book appears to be a candid recollection by someone who was not troubled enough by what he was doing to stop it. Theodore Conneau was born in 1808 in Italy
and made his first voyage to the new world in a ship called Galathea (Conneau 1). He recalled that his first trip was quite uncomfortable as he was seasick for
