than mere scent. Today, people use perfume mostly to be around a nice fragrance, but some use it as a form of therapy. Even shampoos and bath soaps are
sometimes labeled as aromatherapy. Perfume in general is very popular and is often associated with gift giving, particularly for women. The scent industry has expanded to provide colognes for men,
but perfume is most closely aligned with feminine gifts for birthdays and other gift giving holidays. That said, it is interesting to note that many male fragrances are dubbed as
rugged and associated with brands such as Hummer and Harley Davidson. Perfume has become so popular that there are many new scents surfacing all the time, including some that are
aligned with fashion designers or entertainers. This is not surprising in a world replete with branding and marketing, but perfume has been around for quite some time and used for
a variety of purposes. Historically, perfume has been used as a healing substance, as well as something used in love, war, rituals, prayer and to prepare for death (Aftel, 2004).
The earliest perfumes had been called unguents (Aftel, 2005). Although it is known that perfume has been around for a long while, it is uncertain as to when it did
emerge exactly. Some say that it first came about in Mesopotamia (Rimmel, 2005). Others claim that it was really started in Arabia (Rimmel, 2005). One source claims that the Egyptians
were first to use the substance and after that, the "Chinese, Hindus, Israelites, Carthaginians, Arabs, Greeks, and Romans" followed (Bellis, 2007). The Egyptians were the first to use
