That was in the 1940s (Robinson). Of course, that is when the policy was first implemented. The history of apartheid in its strictest sense began during the 1940s but
the truth is that it has a much longer history. That is, the concept goes back to South Africa during the middle of the 1600s (Robinson). During that period, South
Africa was inhabited by indigenous people, including Bantu speaking individuals (Lewis 6). After a voyage in 1652 the Dutch began to settle in the region (Lewis 12). Germans and French
Huguenots would land there a bit afterward and soon they formed a particular group (Lewis 6). The group called themselves Afrikaners and would distinguish themselves from the European nations
from which they came (Lewis 6). They lived as farmers there (Lewis 6). In 1795, the British would take over and that is when slaves began to become imported (Lewis
6). That added "new elements to the racial and cultural mixture of people" (Lewis 6). When in 1834, Britain freed the slaves, there was a great deal of protest
(Lewis 6). That was only the beginning of the history of apartheid. Money, at it usually does in life, would enter the picture in terms of providing an explanation
for things. Diamonds and gold would be found in South Africa, something that would lead to greedy companies wanting to subdue the back laborers (Lewis 8). Essentially, they were
afraid that the black workers were becoming scarce and there was more work to be done; rather than increase their pay, the owners of the firms trying to get the
