a rather well known governor largely due to the fact that he had commuted Leo Franks death sentence to a term of life imprisonment, a move that proved to be
quite controversial. The facts of the case were what prompted Slaton to commute the sentence. In other words, he did not do what he thought was popular. Rather, he did
what he thought was right. The case involved a man by the name of Leo Frank who managed a pencil factory and was accused of murdering an employee3. There had
been seeming anti-Semitism at the trial and Frank was in fact Jewish4. The jury found Frank guilty and the judge imposed the death penalty right away5. It may have seemed
like a fair trial, but many believed that Frank was treated unfairly, largely because he was a Jew from the North6. The facts of the case were not all that
strong, so it is no wonder that chargers of anti-Semitism were waged. Watson was an attorney who refused to defend Frank because he was a Jew, and Watson wanted
Slaton to allow Frank to die; in fact, Watson promised political support if Slaton carried out his wish7. Yet, Governor Slaton stuck to his beliefs and was not swayed by
Watson or anybody else. This anecdote says a lot about the character of Governor Slaton. His political career then may be thought of as indicative of a man who had
