psychological issues through the device of theme. By exploring works through the lens of semiotics, looking for what the signs of narrative and character "point to", one can not only
grasp a better aesthetic understanding of the work itself, but also gain a better sense of the topic the work is referencing (at either the conscious or subconscious level). The
popular television program, "Greys Anatomy", is an excellent example of a show rife with sociological import by way of semiotics. This paper will explore a particular episode of the show
with regards its semiotic content, and the sociological issues addressed by that content. This paragraph helps the student present an overview of the show as a whole and establish the
episode which will be discussed. "Greys Anatomy" is a dramatic series with weekly one-hour long episodes. The show follows the exploits of a group of interns and residents as well
as their mentors, at a major city hospital, Seattle Grace. While every episode features the characters performing their roles within the community of the hospital, many of the narratives that
make up each episode come from examining the characters private lives outside the hospital, their interpersonal interactions, and how their hospital experiences intersect with their private lives. There are many
standout episodes in the series, and so selecting a single one for semiotic analysis can be challenging; nevertheless, the episode, "The Self Destruct Button" was chosen for its multifaceted approach
