paper discusses the ego functions of the main characters; Wills primary mechanisms and his relationship with Sean. Discussion - Ego Functions There are 12 ego functions we need to discuss
and this paper is very short; we cant do more than identify them. The first is reality testing, which is the ability to tell ones internal world from reality and
the differences between them. Sean is very aware of reality; not only is it his profession, but the loss of his wife has affected him deeply. He knows the pain
of reality. Will is also aware of reality but is less grounded. For both of them reality is painful, but whereas Sean faces it squarely, Will uses defense mechanisms to
avoid dealing with it. Judgment: this refers to determining what actions are appropriate in given situations. Both Sean and Will have lapses in judgment in the film. Sean is particularly
out of line when he grabs Will by the throat in their first counseling session; Wills action in setting the proof on fire is particularly hurtful to Lambeau and illustrates
his essential immaturity. He also acts inappropriately - again to hurt - when he walks out on Skylar. Sense of reality: "A good sense of reality involves the ability to
feel or to be aware of the world and ones connection to it as real"; this allows us to form our identity and relate to others (Goldstein, 1995, p. 53).
Sean has this in abundance, again relating to his profession and to his self-awareness (he understands that teaching at the junior college is not a solid career move); Will does
