to the wife and mother of medieval France, todays woman is fairing a great deal better. Thanks to help from a treatise entitled "The Goodman of Paris: A Treatise on
Moral and Domestic Economy," we can sum up the existence of the 14th century Parisian woman in a few words. The typical housewife of the time (at least an
upper-middle-class housewife) was boss in her own home, but subservient to her man in the bedroom and on the street. By todays standards, it seems as though the typical medieval
housewife was put on Earth to serve others, and the joy she received came about from that type of severance. The treatise, authored by a self-styled "Citizen of Paris" and
released somewhere around 1393 offers a rather pompous and condescending view toward women of his time. From the first, assuming that the articles will prove to be "too great a
burden" for the reader to sit and absorb might, indeed, seem horribly condescending to any 21st century woman who holds down a career and manages to run a family. But
it also reminds us that, for the most part, women were illiterate and raised to do little more than run a house and serve their men. Basically, Mr. Citizens understanding
about humanitys relationship to God was that God was chief ruler. "Praise God at your waking," it says in the first article of the second section, extolling the importance of
attending daily mass and putting herself "in the love and grace of God." In addition to humbling herself before God, the Parisian Mrs. must also humble herself before her husband.
Not only was she responsible for loving him and supporting him, but also served as his conscience, as she was also responsible for restraining any of his foolish behavior. The
