from the agrarian economy consisting of land owners and workers, the autocrats rule in the factory and office was absolute - what he mandated needed to be completed, and employees
didnt have a whole lot of say otherwise. However, as the industrial age ground on, it was found that autocratic management (which
is the basis for classical management theory) wasnt too effective in certain types of situations. This ended up giving way to the "humanist" school of management; in other words, a
kinder, gentler management that focused on interacting with employees, as opposed to ordering them around. But lets examine classical management theory for a
moment. Though some point out that classical management is similar to autocratic management, some of the negativity has been taken away from that process. Rather than being referred to as
the manager who demands employees jump when he says jump, the classical manager is referred to as one who creates an environment in which employees perform to achieve the purpose
of a given organization (Nienaber and Roodt, 2008). Classical management theory tends to support definite lines between authority and subordinate (i.e., the "chain of command"), with the structure of the
organization being vertical, or hierarchical. Decisions are made by executives, while employees comply with those decisions, understanding that the decisions and mandates are geared to help an organization reach its
goal. Though some believe that classical management tends to be rigid and inflexible, there are times during which its necessary. Most factories
still adhere to this type of management style, with management determining the quota that is needed, and workers doing their best to reach that quota.
