however, has not prevented it from falling on hard times. Globalization, combined with rising labor costs and foreign imports, has meant that steel companies have either needed to declare
bankruptcy or consolidated in order to survive. As the industry moves into the 21st century, many of the steel makers are finding and dealing with issues of importance to
help ensure their survival. Such issues have included competition, costs, and the need for tariffs to protect the industry. Perhaps one
of the best-known steel makers is U.S. Steel -- which is Americas No. 1 steel manufacturer (United States Steel Corporation). With three steelmaking plants in Alabama, Indiana and Pennsylvania, as
well as an overseas plants and the Slovak Republic, U.S. Steels raw steel production during 2001 was 14,144 net tons (United States Steel Corporation).
Close behind U.S. Steel and Nucor (which is the nations No. 2 steel manufacturing company) is Bethlehem Steel, which ranks third in the United States (Bethlehem Steel Corporation).
But despite this companys name and longevity, Bethlehem had to file for bankruptcy in 2001 because of competition from foreign steel companies (a.k.a. "dumping") and huge payouts to retirees (Bethlehem
Steel Corporation). In the United States, there are approximately 20 integrated steel mills (based on 50 less than half a century ago)
