how the subject is looked at. In their book Time on the Cross: The Economics of American Negro Slavery, authors point out how important economics were in the context of
the slavery issue. The reason why this book is so compelling is that it busts open a number of myths about mistreatment of slaves as well as the idea that
slavery was a racist institution. Rather, slaves were indentured servants, and they were simply part of the American economy. They were at the bottom rung of the economic ladder, much
like the people who work at the gas stations and Wal Marts of today. The reason why this book is likely very controversial is because it fails to recognize
the deep psychological wounds that slavery has done to a people. It gets to the heart of democracy. How can a situation where people are enslaved exist when the truth
is that the countrys foundation is entrenched in liberty and freedom? The controversy comes through in the context of Thomas Weiss scholarly review of the book. Weiss (2001) remarks that
the publication of the book prompted controversy and people were shocked that the argument went to the idea that slavery was profitable. This is true despite the fact that it
is somewhat well known that economics were important in the context of this issue. Of course, there was another issue involved, which made this classic read more interesting. Weiss
(2001) writes: " Scholars, as you can imagine, were all too eager to plow through that material. And rightly so, for another bold claim of the book was that it
