It is a book that delves into many different aspects of the epidemic. The following paper reviews and examines this book by Stilts. A Review of And The Band Played On by Randy Shilts This book is essentially about the first five years of the AIDS story, or epidemic. It details, almost day by day, what took place regarding many high officials, health professionals, political advocates for the gay community, and many other types of people or organizations who were involved in the discovery, and uncovering, of AIDS as it emerged in the United States. It is a work that details how many different people reacted, as well as how many did not react in any way, to the emergence of the problem. It illustrates how it was a very serious problem from the beginning and yet many people did little or nothing about it, fearful of many different things such as encouraging a very powerful uprising against gays and other people who seemed to be the primary target of AIDS. In addition, it speaks of how so much was not known about the condition and how people slowly began to realize the different ways in which AIDS may be transmitted such as through sex and the transmission of fluids, through getting a blood transfusion and through the shared used of needles with drug addicts. Everyone who reads this book will likely gain something different from reading it.
