English became actively involved in the Civil War on the side of the south. The following paper examines the story and offers up a review and report of the novel.
A Report on 1862 by Robert Conroy In this book the author talks of how the British become involved, for the south, in the Civil War. It is
set on the premise that the English have been found out to possess some Confederates on their ship and they decide to fight along with the Confederates to, it seems,
put the Americans in their place. However, it seems that the author does not offer very much in the way of the story of those involved in the south or
the British as much as he is concerned with the occurrences and the individuals who reside in the north. One critic notes "Author Conroy is not interested in the Confederates
at all - they play no role. (They are content to fight their defensive battles, and expect England to win the war for them.)" (Miniscule). As mentioned, it is
a book that offers up a fictional account of what could perhaps happen if the scenario presented were part of history. It reads, in some parts, like a history book.
For example, in the beginning the author states how "Captain Charles Wilkes, U.S. Navy, watched eagerly as the San Jacinto closed on the packet. When there were a mile apart,
the Trent raised the British flag and the San Jacinto followed suit with the Stars and Stripes" (Conroy 1). In these respects one could well say that much of the
