areas of corporate life. In fact, many corporations might have not suffered from a negative image if they had followed a code of ethics in the first place. Some
exemplary firms include the makers of Tylenol that quickly pulled the product from their shelves when there had been a perceived danger. Although it is not known what would
have occurred had Tylenol not been removed, the firm was able to uphold a pristine image because of their quick and ethical action. Other companies were not as forthcoming and
this perhaps would create a negative image and future problems. Firestone for example had a lot of difficulties when their tires would explode for no apparent reason. Deaths were caused.
While Firestone would at first blame the design of the cars on which the tires were situated, they might have taken a quick stance to appease customers and confront the
safety issue head on. Ethics has taken on such an important role in recent times--likely due to the problems that come about when a company makes a faux pas--that many
companies are hiring people just to make sure they fall under appropriate ethical guidelines. Ethics officers however are supposed to do more than simply advise a company about whether
or not they are in compliance with federal law (Pray, 2000). With the initiation of laws that render company officers personally liable for decisions their firms make, there is
also a need for companies to honor their own code of conduct so that they do not face stiff penalties (2000). Thus, attention to ethics is not only good business,
it is practical from a financial standpoint. Langdon (1997) asks: "What benefits can an organization expect from implementing a code of ethics?" (p.3). He explains that evidence is
