president but he was not ranked very highly. Yet, in evaluating his contributions to America, the criticism is not warranted. He was a better president than many realize. First, it
should be said that ranking presidents is not a science. Critics of such surveys claim that the ranks are biased (Imbornoni, 2008). After all, the ranks that are received will
depend upon who is doing the ranking (Imbornoni, 2008). Additionally, how greatness is defined is another issue (Imbornoni, 2008). In respect to ranking, Imbornoni (2008) remarks: " Presidents
who served during a time of war or acute economic crisis would have a certain advantage over those whose terms were relatively peaceful and prosperous. Also, the passage of time
can have an effect on how a president is ranked, given that new information or analysis can change the way we view a particular chief executive." In the case of
Adams, it seems as if people have not taken a second look at this great patriot. Adams was criticized for national as well as foreign policy issues. The Alien
and Sedition Acts were signed by Adams and this made it difficult for foreigners to become citizens ("Welcome to the American Presidency," 2008). The laws were not popular and while
they had been reversed by Congress for the most part, or were simply not renewed, Adams was continually blamed for the problems they caused ("Welcome to the American Presidency," 2008).
Perhaps Adams was blamed unfairly in this case. One negative synopsis of the Adams presidency is as follows: "Adams served only one term as president, and his presidency was not
