to a dream deferred:/ Does it dry up/ Like a raisin in the sun?/ Or fester like a sore_/ And then run?/ Does it stink like rotten meat?/ Or crust
and sugar over_/ Like a syrupy sweet?/ Maybe it just sags/ Like a heavy load?/ Or does it explode?" This poem reflects the ideals and the failures found in the
American Dream, a powerful theme in Hansberrys story. The following paper examines the theme of manhood and materialism. The paper argues that this novel illustrates that the American Dream cannot
offer someone true manhood, nor is materialism the key to the American Dream. Manhood One critic tells us "A Raisin in The Sun can be seen as the
evolution of a young male into manhood....a young male thrown into having the responsibilities of being a husband. It seems he has not yet become a man, however, as he
doesnt seem to have control of his responsibilities and his ideas which he plans to use in order to achieve his dreams seem to be very poorly thought out" (An
Idea of Manhood). And, unfortunately part of his belief in relationship to being a man involves the belief that he must be incredibly financially successful. It is not enough for
him to have a simple job and thus take care of his family. He feels that with a great business plan he can obtain the American Dream and find perfection
