While the two stories are quite different in many respects, they are two very powerful stories which involve the power of a woman and the power of family. The following paper examines how these plays present the audience/reader with this theme. A Raisin in the Sun In Hansberrys play, produced in a time when African Americans had little hopes in becoming equal in society, in 1959, all the characters have dreams (Women of color women of words a raisin in the sun). They independently think and dream of their own future but the primary dream that the story revolves around, and eventually succeeds in fulfilling, is the dream of the mother who wishes a house for her family. One critic, or instructor, notes that many families engage in something called "the cyclical pattern of family, that is, the idea that the sins and virtues of one generation are played out again in the next" (Fences). In the case of Mama this is very true, but she is also the next generation to build upon the dreams of the past, of the past ancestors as she strives to create an even stronger family foundation than previous generations were capable of doing. While some claim this is a story of "An African American family pursuing the American dream of owning a home" it is really about one woman pursuing that dream for her family (Houghton Mifflin Company). In this play the family all live together under one roof. One critic notes, "The plot revolves around what her characters do given the opportunity to escape their cramped surroundings" (NPR).
