from an insurance policy. The family is a struggling African American family consisting of Mama, her son and his wife and son, and her daughter. They all live in a
small place and with this check Mama wants to buy a house so they can begin to establish a better foundation for the family to grow. But, each member of
the family has a dream, and unfortunately this dream must be built on the money left when Mamas husband died. The following paper examines the theme of dreams in this
play. Raisin in the Sun: Dreams The title of this play actually refers to a poem written by Langston Hughes and that poem is title A Dream Deferred.
In this poem the narrator asks what happens to a dream that is deferred. They ask "Does it dry up/ Like a raisin in the sun?/ Or fester like a
sore-/ And then run?/ Does it stink like rotten meat?....Or does it explode" (Reuben). In this one sees the voice of the African American people, and to all oppressed people
who have a dream. When that dream is deferred, suppressed and ignored then something must happen. In A Raisin in the Sun the people in the family struggle and scramble
to make sure that this dream, whatever the dream may be, is not deferred. There are moments, however, when each of the dreams seems futile and is pushed into the
backdrop of the characters mind. The dream that ultimately drives this story is the dream that Mama has in relationship to buying a home with the money. She feels
that through owning a home they can really lay foundations for future generations. It is tangible and also incredibly symbolic. While it is a simple American dream it is also
