Hansberrys "A Raisin in the Sun" is a classic in black theater. First released on Broadway in 1959, "A Raisin in the Sun" is a social drama about everyday black life. Magills Survey of Cinema contends that the film version of the play served as one of the first "really noteworthy films of the 1960s to deal with the black experience". Edwards finds equal value in the original play, reporting that writer James Baldwin proclaimed the play revealed aspects of black life which had never before been seen on stage. One of the most interesting of these revelations is the hierarchical relationship which exists between the family members. The student will be particularly interested in the relationship which exists between the genders. They will find that the black female serves as the primary head of the fictional family presented in the film just as black females often serve as the heads of real life families today and yesterday. The lesson that eventually emerges, however, is that the love and strength of the familys matriarch can ultimately pay off in the maturation of other family members, family members who finally gain the personal strength to take over the responsibilities of the family. The message delivered in "A Raisin in the Sun" is accentuated by the claustrophobic feel of the crowded apartment in South-Side Chicago in which the play unfolds. In that apartment are five family members representing three generations (Magills Survey of Cinema). The plays plot centers around the pressing dilemma of what to do with a sum of $10,000 received when the father of the family dies and the insurance company pays off on a life insurance policy.
