its possible to change society to one that is not racist. Discussion Theres a song in the musical South Pacific, in which an American officer falls in love with a
native girl and suffers the consequences of being involved in an interracial relationship, to the effect that hate has to be carefully taught. Children are not born hating anyone; they
are completely innocent. They do indeed have to be carefully taught to despise others. In fact, the "roles" that people play with regard to race, gender and ethnicity are often
determined more by societal expectations than by the persons own abilities. The family role in perpetuating traditional roles: Parents who teach "traditional roles" to their children usually "socialize" females to
think of their main role as that of wife and mother, with all else being second. Boys will be taught that their role is to find a good job so
that they can be the "breadwinner" for the family. They may reinforce these messages by buying dolls for girls but chemistry sets for boys, for instance. Parents and grandparents may
say things like, "Youll be a beautiful bride, Susan" or "I cant wait to see my first grandchild"-thus reinforcing the wife/mother message to the point that the female sees no
other options. This message is one that is still sent by most of society. Non-traditional families may not try to put girls and boys in such rigid roles, but instead
encourage them to explore what they want to do and be when they grow up. These parents will not imply that girls have no worth unless they are married and
mothers; nor will boys be lectured about career choices and money. The children will be supported and nurtured to try many different things and pursue whatever they find interests them
