Answering the relatively simple question of what to have for dinner, Pollan explores the production of four meals that come from four different food-production systems; and takes that food on
the path from origins to the dinner table. In this paper, well attempt to explore if, indeed, the typical diner becomes somehow involved in moral and ethical dilemmas when it
comes to buying -- and eating -- food. Well start with a food that seems to be an American diet staple, that
of the hamburger. Though the origins of the hamburger are confusing, with several "histories" written about it, the hamburger today is commonplace, not to mention simple. A hamburger consists of
a patty of ground beef that is fried, broiled or grilled. The eater can then put various toppings on it to make it taste better.
Whats interesting, however, is that not all hamburgers are created equal. Thats because not all ground beef is created equal, though all meat comes from cows. Buying
a hamburger from McDonalds is going to be different than buying ground beef to make said hamburger from a major super market. Along those lines, buying ground beef from a
place like Whole Foods is going to be vastly different than buying that same beef from a small-town meat market or a kosher one.
When it comes to "retail" burgers, in other words, already made ones, there are a number of hamburger chains from which to choose, though McDonalds continues to hold
